March 7, 1930 Elmore County Tornado

Tornado Damage Heavy At Seman

On last Thursday night the tornado that swept through middle Alabama dipped into Elmore County at Seman, about 12 miles north of Wetumpka, and caused heavy property damage, though fortunately no lives were lost. The two-story school building was completely wrecked, the loss being estimated at more than $3,000.00. The residence of Commissioner B.J. Hodnett was also unroofed and otherwise damaged and the home of principal of the school, Prof. Ralph Shepherd, was blown from its pillars. The Hodnett and Shepherd families had a miraculous escape but no one was hurt.

             Other homes in the vicinity of Seman were damaged and many trees uprooted and fences blown down.

             The wind was very high in Wetumpka and over the county generally and the rainfall was very heavy.
