Three Negroes Killed When Tornado Strikes

Another tornado struck near Whatley Sunday morning, this time taking a toll of three lives. The twister demolished a house on the property now owned by W.E. Garrick, formerly the Peter Haskew home, and which at the time was occupied by a negro family. A negro woman, the wife of “Ras” Davis, and two sons, aged about 8 and 14 respectively, were killed and “Ras” was pinned under the wreckage for two hours before neighbors arrived to rescue him.

             A little further along the home and outhouses of Mr. G.W. Gates suffered considerable damage, several of the buildings being unroofed. No one in the family, however, sustained any injuries.

             Whatley and adjacent territory have been peculiarly unfortunate in this respect this spring, a tornado striking the town proper the 15th of last month and doing much property damage. While doing much more damage in a material way than that of Sunday, the first storm did not claim any lives nor was anyone seriously injured.
